How to layer a calmer bed through the seasons

Mineral blue striped cotton bedding layered on a bed

A calmer bed should work through the seasons without needing a complete reset every few months. The trick is to keep the base breathable, then change weight, texture and colour around it.

Start with a cotton base

A cotton fitted sheet is useful all year because it is breathable and easy to pair. White keeps the bed bright in summer and still works under warmer layers in winter.

Spring: keep it fresh

Use lighter colours and simple textures. White bedding, natural stripes and eucalyptus green all feel right as the room gets brighter. Keep heavy throws off the bed unless the nights are still cool.

Summer: reduce the layers

Choose breathable cotton and avoid crowding the bed with too many cushions or blankets. A crisp fitted sheet and a light cotton duvet cover are often enough.

Autumn: add texture

As the light changes, texture becomes more important. Muslin cotton, woven stripes and warmer neutrals can make the room feel softer without becoming heavy.

Winter: warm the palette

You may want a warmer duvet or an extra throw, but the bedding itself can stay calm. Natural stripes, mineral blue and soft green work well with wood, wool and deeper wall colours.

Keep the palette connected

If your sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers all sit within the same calm palette, changing the bed for the season becomes easier. You can rotate pieces instead of starting again.
