Good cotton bedding should be easy to live with. The right washing routine keeps it fresh without making the fibres feel tired before their time.
Always start with the care label
Different cotton finishes can have different instructions, so the care label wins. Some cotton percale sheets can be washed at 60 degrees, while other pieces may be better at a gentler temperature. Check before you wash.
Separate colours and close fastenings
Wash whites, pale colours and strong colours separately. Fasten buttons or poppers on duvet covers before washing so smaller pieces do not get trapped inside.
Do not overload the machine
Bedding needs space to move, rinse and spin. If the drum is too full, sheets and duvet covers can twist into a heavy bundle, which makes washing and drying less effective.
Use less detergent than you think
Too much detergent can leave residue, especially on cotton that should feel crisp. Use the right amount for the load and water hardness, and avoid heavy fabric softener if you want the cotton to stay breathable.
Dry with airflow
Line drying gives cotton a fresh feel when weather allows. If using a tumble dryer, choose a gentle setting where the label allows it, remove bedding promptly, and smooth seams while the fabric is still slightly warm.
Iron only if it suits the look
Percale looks crisp with a warm iron. Muslin and relaxed cottons are meant to have more texture, so do not feel obliged to press every crease out.
